Following the iconic "Black Issue", Vogue Italia has returned with a stunning and equally monumental editorial "Black Allure" featuring the new generation of beautiful black models. Lending their decadent allure to the issue are Chanel Iman, Jordan Dunn, Sessilee Lopez, Joan Smalls, Ajek Deng, Arlenis Sosa Pena, Melodie Monrose, Kinee Douf, Lais Ribeiro, Rose Cordero, Mia Aminata Niaria and Georgie Baddiel.
This is a great step in the right direction for models of colour, however the dateless issue of discrimination within the modelling industry still ensues-a topic of debate highlighted by Editor In Chief of Vogue Italia, Franca Sozzani on her blog, where she pens "Is skin colour still an issue?"
"“We continue to give it [diversity] more space in the magazine and website. The truth is that real beauty doesn’t care for skin color or nationality.”
The girls look unreservedly divine in the Harlem Renaissance inspired issue-with that said, my only concern is based on the rarity and often non-existent presence of black models in mainstream fashion magazines. Why should their relevance be limited to a special magazine edition as opposed to regular features ?
